Variability of the anthracnose fungus Colletotrichum graminicola in sorghum genotype mixtures Trop. Plant Pathol.
Valério,Henrique M.; Casela,Carlos R.; Resende,Maria A.; Santos,Fredolino G..
This paper reports partial results obtained on the variability of Colletotrichum graminicola developed in response to the host diversity generated by three-line combination of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) genotypes. Nine sorghum lines were used in this study: CMSXS210B, CMSXS112B, CMSXS215B, CMSXS221B, CMSXS169R, CMSXS180R, CMSXS182R, CMSXS227R, and CMSXS116R. A total of 39 treatments on mixtures and pure stands of the component lines were evaluated in the field for the development of anthracnose, as a natural epidemic. Samples of the single spore isolates of the pathogen of each treatment indicated a reduction in the phenotypic diversity and an increase in the frequency of more complex races in genotype mixtures in relation to the pure stands of each genotype.

Variação temporal da comunidade fitoplanctônica em lagos urbanos eutróficos - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i4.5955 Biological Sciences
Nabout, João Carlos; UFG; Nogueira, Ina Souza; UFG.

Species composition, biomass and diversity of the phytoplankton in a subtropical lake (27°29'S; 58°45'W) were studied from February 1995 to March 1996. One or two samples were taken monthly in the limnetic and the littoral area. Cell counts were done by the Utermöhl method (1958). Phytoplankton biomass varied among 2.38 and 45.59 mm³.m-2 with a mean value of 12.11 (±10.52) mm³.m-2. The population density oscillated among 0.3x10(6) and 4.7x10(6) ind.cm-2. Cyanophyta was the dominant group all the year contributing among 25% and 83% of the total biomass. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii, Aphanizomenon sp. and Microcystis aeruginosa were the dominant species. The Chlorophyta, second group in importance, contributed among 8% and 50% being Botryococcus braunii...

Variation in synonymous codon use and DNA polymorphism within the Drosophila genome ArchiMer
Bierne, Nicolas; Eyre Walker, A.
A strong negative correlation between the rate of amino-acid substitution and codon usage bias in Drosophila has been attributed to interference between positive selection at nonsynonymous sites and weak selection on codon usage. To further explore this possibility we have investigated polymorphism and divergence at three kinds of sites: synonymous, nonsynonymous and intronic in relation to codon bias in D. melanogaster and D. simulans. We confirmed that protein evolution is one of the main explicative parameters for interlocus codon bias variation (r(2) similar to 40%). However, intron or synonymous diversities, which could have been expected to be good indicators of local interference [here defined as the additional increase of drift due to selection on...

Variation of the ichthyofauna along the Goioerê River: an important tributary of the Piquiri-Paraná basin Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Tos,Claudenice Dei; Gomes,Luiz C.; Rodrigues,Maria A..
The construction of reservoirs is considered an important source of impacts on the fish fauna, severely altering the structure of the assemblage. This paper aimed to describe the structure of the fish assemblage of the Goioerê River, determining its longitudinal distribution and patterns of species dominance. The evaluation of its longitudinal variation in the diversity and abundance of the fish assemblage was conducted in July and October 2004 and January and May 2005. The collections were carried out near the headwaters (Gurucaia), middle stretch (Olaria), just above the falls (Paiquerê) and downstream (Foz). Forty-four species were captured. The Gurucaia fish assemblages differed significantly from Olaria, Paiquerê and Foz. The Olaria assemblages...

Vertical structure of an assemblage of bats (Mammalia: Chiroptera) in a fragment of Atlantic Forest in Southern Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
Carvalho,Fernando; Fabián,Marta E.; Menegheti,João O..
Few studies have focused the vertical structure of bat assemblages, and how it influences community composition. The goal of this study was to analyze the vertical structure of an assemblage of bats in a forest fragment in southern Brazil. Bats were sampled using mist-nets placed at three heights (understory, below-canopy, and canopy). Forest strata were compared with respect to their species richness and diversity. The latter was estimated using the Shannon-Wiener index (H'), and the statistical significance of differences among strata was assessed using t tests. We used an index of Constancy (C) to determine the frequency of a given species in each vegetation stratum, such that a species was considered as "frequent" (C > 50), "less frequent" (25...

Visual censuses around drifting fish aggregating devices (FADs): a new approach for assessing the diversity of fish in open-ocean waters ArchiMer
Gaertner, J; Taquet, Marc; Dagorn, L; Merigot, B; Aumeeruddy, R; Sancho, G; Itano, D.
This study provides a baseline measure of pelagic fish species diversity around fish aggregating devices (FADs) in the Western Indian Ocean. Using data from visual censuses made by SCUBA divers around drifting FADs we (1) analysed 11 diversity indices describing 4 main components of pelagic diversity: number of species, evenness, taxonomic diversity and rarity and (2) discussed the viability of using visual censuses around FADs to monitor temporal and spatial changes in diversity patterns of pelagic fishes in the future. Our results not only show that a single index, such as species richness or the Shannon-Wiener index, cannot provide a complete description of pelagic fish diversity around FADs, but also that some components of diversity appear to be...

Weed Diversity in Corn with Different Plant Arrangement Patterns Grown Alone and Intercropped with Palisade Grass Planta Daninha
MELO,T.S.; MAKINO,P.A.; CECCON,G..
ABSTRACT: Composition and level of weed infestation interfere with crop yield and increase production costs. This study aimed to identify weed composition and infestation in corn grown with different plant populations, single, and intercropped with palisade grass. The phytosociological method was used to evaluate density, frequency, dominance, and infestation level of weeds in single and intercropped corn, a with conventional (0.90 m) and reduced (0.45 m) spacing, and low and high plant population in Dourados, MS, Brazil. Commelina benghalensis, Echinochloaspp., and Euphorbia heterophylla were the species most found in the treatments. Single corn with higher plant population decreased weed occurrence. Treatments with palisade grass under a reduced spacing...

What do we know about Neotropical trap-nesting bees? Synopsis about their nest biology and taxonomy Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Costa,Camila Cristina Ferreira da; Gonçalves,Rodrigo Barbosa.
Abstract Cavity-nesting bees are enigmatic because they are difficult to observe in the wild, hence trap-nests (man-made cavities) provide the means by which these bees may be studied. Trap-nests is an efficient methodology to study these bees and are common worldwide. These traps have been used for a variety of reasons, including inventories, to examine pollen load, to study habitat disturbance, and bee conservation. However Neotropical trap-nesting bees’ taxonomy and biology are still poorly known and here we provide a review about these subjects. We searched for trap-nest bee studies in the Neotropical Region using Google Scholar and ISI Web of Science at any time in the past to December 2017. We found 109 independent studies, most of which were from...

Why we shouldn’t blame women for gender disparity in academia: perspectives of women in zoology Rev. Bras. Zool.
Slobodian,Veronica; Soares,Karla D.A.; Falaschi,Rafaela L.; Prado,Laura R.; Camelier,Priscila; Guedes,Thaís B.; Leal,Laura C.; Hsiou,Annie S.; Del-Rio,Glaucia; Costa,Eliza R.; Pereira,Karla R.C.; D’Angiolella,Annelise B.; Sousa,Shirliane de A.; Diele-Viegas,Luisa M..
ABSTRACT The following letter, from a network of women zoologists, is a reply to the article of AlShebli et al. (2020), which suggests that female protégés reap more benefits when mentored by men and concludes that female mentors hinder the success of their female protégés and the quality of their impact. This contribution has two parts. First, we highlight the most relevant methodological flaws which, in our opinion, may have impacted the conclusions of AlShebli et al. (2020). Second, we discuss issues pertaining to women in science, bring a perspective of Women in Zoology and discuss how current diversity policies are positively changing our field.

สิทธิเกษตรกร: ผลกระทบจากร่างแก้ไขกฎหมายคุ้มครองพันธุ์พืช Thai Agricultural
Somchai Ratanachueskul.
Agriculture has been one of the most important occupations in the Thai society from the past to the present. A considerable number of plant varieties in Thailand are partly derived from the farmers’ path of life and their customs—they exchange seeds and knowledge relating to such varieties. However, under unavoidable international trade and free market paradigm, agriculture businesses led by multinational corporations encourage and support modern agriculture by convincing farmers to cultivate for export using high yield varieties, and limiting farmers’ choice to grow crops. Under these circumstances, the principle factors of farmers’ cultivation, seeds and plant varieties among others, are transformed into private property and protected by an intellectual...
